Nakamichi DR-3 Cassette Deck Repair & Service

A few months ago, my brother-in-law gifted me his father’s Nakamichi gear, including an RE-1 receiver, Music Bank CD player, and DR-3 cassette deck. Needless to say, I was pretty excited.

Each component had its own issues to deal with. The CD player has a broken transport gear that I’m not sure will ever be fixable. The receiver had some scratchy knobs but otherwise behaved well after a good cleaning. And the DR-3 had a completely dead display.

After some research, I discovered this is a pretty common issue. Some diagnostic work led me to an open IP451 fuse. Further research showed that the small gumdrop-style capacitors used in the power supply are prone to failure, so I began pulling and testing each of them, parts 402 through 407. Sure enough, one had failed.

Since I already had the unit disassembled, I decided to move forward with a full recap of the power supply. Upon reassembly, the display lit up brightly. Success!

Next, I’ll be moving on to a full transport service and replacing the belts. After that, this DR-3 should be ready to go.

I plan to keep this one due to its sentimental value and the history it has in our family.

Disassembly was pretty straightforward. I’ve included a YouTube video below showing the transport service procedure, along with photos and captions highlighting a few of the process gotchas I encountered along the way.
